VPN configuration for Windows XP

Obtaining the VPN Client for Windows

Before instaling the software you windows instalation must have all Microsoft updates.

  1. Download the Cisco VPN Client

If you are using Windows Vista, see the corresponding manual.

Installing the VPN Client

  1. Save and run the downloaded file:

  1. Click “Next” to install the VPN Client:

  1. When the installation finishes, click “Yes” to restart the system:

Obtaining your personal certificate

  1. When the system is again up and running, open our browser (Internet Explorer) and go to The following dialog box will be shown:

  1. Access will be granted only after the presentation of valid credentials, consisting of your username and a password. Your username should be introduced with the suffix. (Note: if you are using Windows 98, do not qualify your username with The password is the same used for wireless access. Press <return> after introducing your credentials.
  2. If you do not know your personal credentials or can not access, please contact us.
  3. Click “Request a certificate” under “Select a task”:

  1. Click “User Certificate” on the new page:

  1. The “User Certificate – Identifying Information” page will be shown. Click “Submit >”:

  1. A dialog box will appear. Click “Yes” to confirm your certificate request:

  1. The “Certificate Issued” page will be shown. Click “Install this Certificate”:

  1. If the “Certificate Installed” page is shown, then your certificate as been installed with success:

Obtaining the CA certificate

  1. Make sure you returned to ISCTECA’s home page.
  2. Click “Download a CA certificate, certificate chain, or CRL” under “Select a task”:

  1. Choose “Base 64”, under “Encoding method”, and click “Download CA certificate”:

  1. Select “Open” on the dialog box:

  1. A ”Certificate” dialog box will appear. Select the “General” tab and click “Install Certificate...”:

  1. Go on clicking “Next”. In the end, click ”Finished”. If the CA’s certificate installs successfully, the following alert box will be shown:

Configuring the VPN Client

  1. The previously VPN Client will be accessible from “Start”->”Programs”->”Cisco Systems VPN Client”->”VPN Client”. Run it from there:

  1. The VPN Client window will be shown. Click “New” to create a VPN connection to ISCTE:

  1. Fill the connection properties as follows:

  1. End the connection configuration by clicking “Save”.
  2. Quit the VPN Client application.
  3. Open the file located in C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\Profiles\ISCTE.pcf (ou C:\Program Files\Cisco Systems\VPN Client\Profiles\ISCTE.pcf) and open it with a text editor (for example Windows WordPad).
  4. Add the following line at end of file: UseLegacyIKEPort=1
  5. Save de changes and close the file.

Connecting to ISCTE

  1. Launch the VPN Client and double-click “ISCTE”:

  1. Insert your credentials (the same you used to enter the CA’s Web site):

  1. The following banner should appear:

  1. Click “Continue”.
  2. Note! If your conection is successful, all VPN Client windows will close and a small locker-shaped icon will appear in the Windows notification area. There will not be any other apparent changes to your environment. The main difference is that your computer is virtually connected to ISCTE's network, and hence has access to exactly the same services as any computer connected directly inside ISCTE.
